Ásta Júlía Guðjónsdóttir was born in Iceland in 1978. Ever since she was a little girl she was fasinated with photography and used every chance she got to push the button on her father's old Pentax, up until when she was given her own compact camera at the age of 12. After finishing collage studies of biology with photography as a chosen subject, Ásta decided to focus completely on photography and applied for studies in “Ljósmyndaskólinn”, from where she gratuated in 2000.
Around this time Ásta met her future husband, Haukur M, an independent filmmaker and they started to collaborate together. Ásta worked as a still photographer on two feature films directed by Haukur M and they held two exhibitions: one in 2000 with b&w series of big prints called “Hugarburður 2” and one in 2008 called “inn og útum gluggann” with 365 color prints 20x30 and video installation.
From here Ásta´s intrest in photography had evolved into moving images so she aplied for cinematography studies in PWSFTviT, National Film School in Lodz Poland, from where she will finish a master degree in 2014. During the time in the Polish Film School she has worked on various projects, both fiction and documentary, in and out of School. Some of the work she did with her husband Haukur M has been awarded in various film festivals, for example the short “Mission to Mars” won the best film in Short Film Days 2012 in Iceland.
Today Ásta´s main focus is on documentaries as she really enjoys to observe and somehow become a part of people's lives and possibly be able to capture their magic through the lens.
